GO GREYHOUND.

I'm going to Rochester this weekend, yay!

This, of course, means I get to spend approximately 8.5 hours total on a Greyhound bus. Some questions for tonight's exciting journey:

Will I be able to maneuver a seat by myself through my usual routine of making no eye contact, "forgetting" to move my jacket from the seat next to me, eating a loud or strange food as others are boarding, and/or hauling out a textbook, clipboard and several writing utensils and balancing them on my lap such that I just noticeably take up more than one seat?

If I do get stuck with a seatmate, will it be a grandmother who wants to sleep and kind of keeps tipping over onto me, an incredibly thin college-age girl who is too fashionable to speak to me, the one lady who wears shorts and flipflops all year long and snaps at people who offer to lend her a jacket, or that one nice goth girl who let me listen to her music and was actually pretty cool to talk to? (HINT: It won't be the seatmate actually I enjoyed. Ever again.)

Will I again have the bus driver whom I have heard say, "If you do decide to smoke, I will smell it, and I hope you brought a friend along with you, or else it's going to be lonely on the side of the road all by yourself," in precisely the same manner at least five times?

Will aforementioned driver get into an extended argument with a woman who is blind because she doesn't want to be escorted off the bus before everyone else, which the driver is required to do by law?

Will the bus need to be returned to the Cleveland station after twenty minutes of highway driving because it is severely tilted to one side? If so, can the driver please take the exit he's not familiar with and almost get us lost/stuck under a one-lane railroad bridge?

Will that kid who I think is from CIM but have never spoken to be riding, and will we sit in the same seating configuration we have each time?

Is the weather bad enough that I will spend much of the trip expecting death?

Do we really have to stop at McDonald's again?

And finally, how many people will not ever get on or off at the stupid ASHTABULA corner gas station bus stop?

So I'm back from a spontaneous- but well-deserved- one-month vacation from LiveJournal...

*yawns and stretches*

At first I wasn't writing because I was incredibly busy at work (from where I typically post entries) and at home (courtesy lots of fun with our houseguest, Steve!). Then midmonth I got a few harrassing comments (two links there) that inspired me to not write again for the rest of January. Pointless rebellion, I know, but not thinking about my activities and contemplations in terms of whether people would be interested in reading about them was kind of...nice. Especially since my life is generally not that exciting.

Anyway, I hope this means I'm getting back into The Scene for 2004:2.

We'll see.

aaron_idx: This is hilarious. I just read in the PD that the FBI is warning police departments nationwide to be on the lookout for people with almanacs.
aaron_idx: Because terrorists could be using almanacs to gather information for their next terrorist plot.

navygreyalso: hmm?

aaron_idx: ALMANACS!!!!

navygreyalso: Like in Back to the Future?
navygreyalso: Like how Old Bif took the sports almanac back in time and won tons of money on bets?

aaron_idx: Exactly.

navygreyalso: You'd think we'd be a bit more worried about the time machines than the almanacs...

tkbenmo is Aaron's friend from RIT. He's a film major- ; D - and is awesome (follow the Ben Mo link!). For this reason, Aaron won't let me talk to him anymore out of PURE JEALOUSY!!! Okay, I actually AM allowed to talk to him, which is a good thing. : ) (PS- You can see some of his work on his site, which I intend to do as soon as stupid finals are over.)

Dave isn't posting much yet, as he's battling through a horrific final exam period in order to not have to be an undergraduate any more AND spend the holidays in Europe. Somehow, despite only meeting in our senior year of high school and living in different states for five years (he goes to Washington University of St. Louis), we've remained good friends. I want to say a bunch of sappy friendship stuff now...but instead I will reveal that his WashU nickname is CHEWY!

Hmm, I wrote a lot about these guys...I think it may have something to do with the mountains of order requests I'm supposed to be processing... : )

Up my alley

I snatched this survey from a random lj user who also stole it...from a place unspecified. Oh well.

It's all about regional language differences, so please take a minute to do this if you can- especially those of you who live/have lived outside the greater Cleveland area, or have parents that do/did. Indulge me; you know I love stuff like this!

Age:
Where did you grow up?
Where did your parents grow up?

WHAT DO YOU CALL:
1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks?

2. The thing you push around the grocery store?

3. A metal container to carry a meal in?

4. The thing in which you cook bacon and eggs?

5. The piece of furniture that seats three people?

6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof?

7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening?

8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages?

9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup?

10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself?

11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach?

12. Shoes worn for sports?

13. Putting a room in order?

14. A flying insect that glows in the dark?

15. The little insect that curls up into a ball?

16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down?

17. How do you eat your pizza? (EDIT: This question doesn't fit in the survey AT ALL, but you can answer it if you want...)

18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff?

19. What's the evening meal?

20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?

I posted my answers in the comments; it's probably easier to answer these accurately without staring at someone else's answers. You can post there if you don't care to have this in your own journal.

Okay. Cool.

I'm actually pretty excited about this- have some pity on my lame self, thanks!

Sign of good things to come? Nah, not really.

Yesterday, I finally got financial aid! Yes, for THIS semester of which this is the last week of classes. It's a long and painful story- I'm still grateful to the External Loans office people for their help- but I'm so glad it's over.

So this is great news, okay? Like the best news I've had in...hmm...yeah, that's sad...

But of course, Fate realized pretty quickly that she let a little good fortune slip through and land in my life. Being too late to take back the mistake, she promptly set into motion a sudden and horrible cold, which is now tormenting my poor little throat. Yuck.

Yeah...I'm whining...but I actually do feel awful. Please don't catch my cold, anyone!

Two friends have been added because they added me! Thanks guys!!!

Mike is my roommate Judy's boyfriend. He has a full-time job! And I'm never sure whether he hates me or not. ; )

Lynn was a dorm-mate from the three years that were my Tippit days. She is a Survivor expert AND has been to Wales, except she got to stay much longer than I did!

In addition, IT'S BRYAN'S 21st BIRTHDAY!!!
Virtually mindless opportunity to help small animals : )

For those in my VAST body of readers who live in Ohio, I'm including a link to a petition which seeks to ban a) giving away rabbits and other little guys as carnival prizes, b) dyeing animals for sale in awful "Easter" colors, and c) selling small animals on the street. This is a direct rip-off of a California law, but I still think it's good.

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/OhioBan/

I will specifically point out, especially for Judy, that guinea pigs (and mice and hamsters and reptiles and fish) are not explicitly mentioned in the law as it is written, so feel free to comment on their behalf if you sign.

I recognize that maybe, or even probably, this petition won't go anywhere. Still, I feel compelled to do what I can, as I'm pretty sure Wyatt and Ivy would very much NOT enjoy being given away to some random kid who got a ping pong ball to land in the red cup, or being pushed on the corner like crack (I guess California is a stranger place than I thought)!

Thanks...and sorry to bug people : )
